What are the responsibilities for an IRO?

  • Analyse, summarise and evaluate this information to provide a holistic assessment of a child's needs.
  • Understand the context of child development, parenting capacity and family and environmental factors in which to establish the needs of an individual child
  • Assess and balance risk and protective factors within a child protection framework
  • Provide written and verbal reports which are concise, informative and based on analysis of complex evidence
  • Review and reassess when necessary and be open to a change of view in response to new evidence
  • To comply with statutory guidance by providing independent chairing of child protection conferences and reviews of looked after children, and to chair complex strategy meetings.
  • To carry out quality assurance monitoring, report findings and make recommendations about the practice improvements required.
  • To act as consultant to managers, social work staff and other agencies about policy, procedure and practice relating to Child Protection/safeguarding and Children Looked After.

Requirements for an IRO?

  • A recognized Social Work qualification (Degree/DipSW/CQSW) with a minimum of 2 years' experience.
  • A valid HCPC registration
  • Significant experience of working as a Qualified Social Worker and an understanding of the current legislation relevant to Child Social Care
  • A clear enhanced DBS
